Next Steps for Urban Community Gardens in Milwaukee Wisconsin

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to shed light on the current network of community gardens based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin through defining qualities of successful community garden models, identifying possible ways for community gardens to become more effective, and to consider and suggest possible next steps for community gardens in Milwaukee. Results from individual interviews with community garden administrators, confirmed and expanded upon by a focus group, helped form the basis for this research study. The findings presented a rich picture of energetic diversity within various organizations involved in community gardening. Much has been accomplished by organizations and administrators with expansion of community gardens throughout the city, yet there exists many areas for improvement. According to the findings in this study, administrators and volunteers alike suggested more collaborative efforts were needed, permanent land issues must be resolved, and better citywide networking could benefit community gardens and Milwaukee as a whole. The conclusion of this research study found that through expanded engagement techniques, improved communication, and continued support for citywide efforts, community gardens will continue to have a successful and sustainable future in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
